Co-creation for Transformative Innovation Policy: an implementation case for projects structured as portfolio of knowledge services

This papers presentes the results of a joint effort between #sciencepolicy, the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium, and practitioners, the Climate-KIC, to produce new #knowledge on #cocreation for #policymaking
The publication gathers insights on Transformative Innovation Policies from the MOTION project by focusing on implementation aspects with an innovative look at #portfolios of knowledge services.

Thanks a lot to my co-authors Carla Alvial Palavicino and Christoph Brodnik, such a fantastic journey to get here!

Exploring indicators for monitoring sociotechnical system transitions through portfolio networks

This paper presents a new approach to #monitoringandevaluation in #sustainability#transitions by focusing on #innovation#portfolios as infrastructure for programme-based investments. It brings new insights for innovation agencies working with project portfolios.

This publication results from a collaboration between the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) and the EIT – European Institute of Innovation and TechnologyClimate-KIC, to create new #knowledge on #scienceforpolicy and #innovation.

Many thanks to my co-authors Caetano C.R. Penna and Oscar Yandy Romero Goyeneche, I really enjoyed working with you and connecting the dots!

Towards a fair and sustainable Europe 2050: Social and economic choices in sustainability transitions

The study explores the interplay between #sustainability #transitions and #foresight to highlight the relevance of the agency of EU actors in shaping Europe’s sustainable future.
As part of an exceptional team including experts from multiple organisations, we delved into the complexities of sustainability transitions, examining how foresight methodologies and evidence-based approaches can guide policy decisions.
This report underscores the urgent need for #transformative policies prioritising sustainability, social equity, and economic prosperity. By leveraging #science and #research, we can drive informed #decisionmaking processes that address the challenges of today and pave the way for a sustainable #Europe by 2050.
I am immensely proud to have contributed to this report, which serves as #actionable  #knowledge for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders invested in sustainable development.

Transition Policy Labs. Enabling capacity building, experimentation and design for policy to the practitioners community

In 2021, The Transition Policy Lab series supported policymakers in different countries to introduce policy-making practises by removing barriers to enable the necessary institutional change. It aimed to build capacity for co-designing and implementing systemic policies that can lead to transformative strategies and actions.

The #EIT Regional Innovation Scheme’s Transition Policy Labs, developed by the Transitions Hub, consisted of five interconnected capacity-building activities delivered in three different formats: Multi-stakeholder setting, science-based training and executive programmes.

MOTION handbook. Developing a transformative theory of change

This handbook introduces actionable knowledge on developing A Transformative Theory of Change by applying a portfolio approach to address a systems innovation perspective for projects and programmes. Tools, methods and lessons learned result from working hand in hand with EIT Climate-KIC projects around a portfolio of knowledge services for sustainable systems transformation. The step-by-step methodology aims to support practitioners in designing, implementing, and evaluating projects aimed at transformative system change by combining the Theory of Change methodology with the Multi-Level Perspective (MLP). It can be used to facilitate a co-creation process among societal stakeholders invested in sustainability, connecting innovation with societal challenges through the effective delivery of knowledge service.
The handbook has been developed through the collaboration between the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium, INGENIO-UPV, the Austrian Institute of Technology and EIT Climate-KIC as part of the MOTION EIT Climate-KIC project.

A system innovation approach for schools

In 2017, the Visual Toolbox for System Innovation was part of a lab to develop new tools for schools. Considering a modular approach, including the EIT RM @Schools approach and other methods proposed by partners of both KICs, such as myclimate and Solutions for the Planet, they were part of the design, testing and implementation of an integrated common module.
The @GreenSchools aim to improve human capital by extending high-quality and inspiring training and methodologies developed by the 6 existing KICs for higher education to the wider society to promote a more open, innovative and entrepreneurial mindset.

This project was the nucleus for the Young Innovators Programme launched in 2018, which aims to support teachers and educators in improving systems thinking and solving complex problems in the classroom. The emergence of this Young Innovator Programme points us to the application of the challenge-based approach in the educational context. This is a collective problem-solving perspective originally developed by the Climate KIC Transitions Hub to address transitions to sustainability in socio-economic systems. The aim of the training for teachers is to introduce a systems innovation approach that raises awareness of climate change challenges and promotes creative thinking and climate innovation skills among the younger generation (12-18 years).
The resulting Teacher’s Guide is a comprehensive handbook for teachers and educators with clear steps and practical tips on facilitation.
